School Garden Gives Greens to Community

Our Sustainability class engaged in a group discussion about what positive initiatives we could accomplish with our greenhouse. One student brought forth the idea of growing food to donate to those in need. We all agreed on the spot; we will donate to the local food bank.

We applied for a grant to the Healthy Schools Network, and off we went. Our journey began: we brought in local volunteers to help amend our soil, we purchased lots of heirloom seeds, and we brought out the shovels.

The class took care of their seedlings each week: watering, weeding, and picking out slugs and other bugs that were eating our crop. The students worked with enthusiasm, no job was too big or too dirty. Fun was had whenever we were at the greenhouse.

By mid-May our hard work had paid off. We had enough fresh greens to donate to both the weekly community lunch and the local food bank. Students harvested peas, arugula, lettuce, kale, cilantro, chives, and parsley. The local food bank volunteers were full of smiles, a new friendship had been made. The food bank staff later reported back that all fresh greens disappeared quickly!

Thank you to the Healthy Schools Network and DASH BC for helping us help others!
